Cathy Green

Cathy Green is a drummer and bass player who  started drumming in her first band  **** **** (Cough Cough,1979-1983) when she was 14 years old. This was the first independent band that Cathy played drums in, and they described their style as ‘Bent Music’. It was a three-piece left-of-centre band that caused a stir at the time because they pushed the boundaries of even the most ‘artsy’ bands of the era – they were very polarizing and you either ‘got’ them or you didn’t.

Cathy's bands are as follows:

  • X - Not long after “*****,*****” broke up, Cathy joined X - a hard rock band with Ian Rilen from Rose Tattoo as the lead guitarist . X were headed down the Hume from Sydney for a tour of Melbourne without their drummer (who had suddenly decided to leave the band), and Cathy got a call from Neil Bradbury who ran Mushroom Record’s independent offshoot ‘White Label’, who told her about the X dilemma.  Cathy Green was a huge fan of the band X and, already knowing the songs, replaced drummer Steve Cafiero in 1984 for the Melbourne tour on just a few days notice. Not long after that, Cafiero died when injected with a dye prior to an X-ray for a back complaint, and Cathy became a permanent member of X.  The band's second album, At Home With You (1985) was recorded in Melbourne at Richmond Recorders. The album stayed in Australia's top 20 Independent charts for 29 months. A third album, X And More (1989) followed, and like the previous albums, was produced by the legendary musician Lobby Loyde.

  • Red Dress - Around the late 1990’s Cathy began her own band called Red Dress which consisted of Penny Ikinger (guitar), Mary-Ellen Stringer (vocals), and Rodney Howard (bass) who was later replaced by Rosie Westbrook for their debut C.D. release tour. Cathy played the drums but wrote most of the songs.

  • Universe - in 1997, Cathy on bass, joined Steve Balbi, on lead vocals to form a new group called Universe, with an all-star line-up from the more ‘mainstream’ side of the music industry.

  • Basket-Case - During this period of time, Cathy also played bass in a band called Basket-Case. Basket-case was a fun band (covers and originals) with Tony Polar (drums), Megan Bawden (guitar, vox), Cathy (bass). They  had many floating members that joined in on their Sunday afternoon residency at the Prince of Wales Piano Bar that ran for about a year.

  • Cathy returned to Melbourne around 2000, and picked up the bass with Ian Rilen again, this time in The Love Addicts. They played together until Ian passed away in 2006. Cathy again started her own band called Poker Hearts, which was fairly short-lived. During this period, Cathy and Megan Bawden had a duo called The Fascinators, and she was moonlighting with other occasional friends who were touring through Melbourne (e.g., Loene Carmen, Steve Balbi).

  • Cathy has also played, toured, wrote and recorded in various bands with the range of instruments that she loves to play including: Bass guitar with Ian Rilen in Skindiver; drums with Loene Carmen in her wonderful band Automatic Cherry; vocals and acoustic 12 string in her own band Good Fight with Sarah Peet (cello and bass), and Suzie Phillips (percussion and bv’s).

  • Nowadays, Cathy plays the occasional gig usually with Megan Bawden and mostly in St Kilda – their most recent show was at George Lane.

Cathy has played gigs at St Kilda music venues including: The Crystal Ballroom, Greyhound Hotel (Front and back bar), The Venue, The Palace, Palais Theatre, The Vineyard, Lost, The Espy (Star Wars Bar, Front Bar, Back Bar, Gershwin Room), Snake Pit Bar, The Galleon Café (they used to hold fantastic acoustic nights years ago), Village Belle Hotel, St Kilda Bowling Club, Prince of Wales Hotel (Piano Bar and Prince Band Room), George Lane, Dogs Bar, Pure Pop Records, The Parish Church on Acland Street.

"I have lived in and around St Kilda for the largest portion of my life, and although I don’t live there now and the demographics have definitely changed, St Kilda will always remain my spiritual home – it’s where I discovered, learnt, and experienced many things about life and living.

There was (and still is) always a community of like-minded souls to interact with, who support and create music, art, cafes, bars, galleries, and any interesting and courageous adventure that requires the belief and enthusiasm of others to "make it happen". And – St Kilda is the most welcoming place for dogs that I have ever lived in – that says a lot about the collective heart of the place!"

"In August 1990, when the Prince of Wales was closing (supposedly for good) and X were the headline band, Ian and I lived a couple of blocks away and as we approached the venue we were bombarded by a group of about 20 or 30 punters/friends that were gathered outside the POW. The night was completely sold out and the crowd that had gathered out the front in hope of getting tickets. The bouncers spotted Ian and I through the bolted glass front doors and tried to usher us in, but Ian just grabbed my arm and the shoulders of others around us and defiantly reported that we were not coming in unless EVERYONE was coming in with us.  Ian was staunch about our conditions of entry and we held steadfast at the door..."

"...Eventually they had to relent and threw the doors open to let Ian, myself, and every punter that was outside in. I skedaddled pretty quickly up the stairs so I could get to the stage to set my drums and take my shoes off (I always played barefooted), but when I glanced back, the whole crowd who had just been let in - plus the bouncers, had lifted Ian above their heads to carry him up the stairs like a trophy and deliver him into the heaving band-room roaring with cheers of victory and defiant fists pumping the air. It was incredible and set the gig up for being one of the most memorable X shows. I think we re-opened the POW about 6 months later too! (you can’t keep a good venue down)."
